The American Dream

As you go through life, you are constantly being pushed and pulled by these unexpected elements that seem to make way to you. Not long after, you realize that those adjustments in life were simply hidden benefits promised to you and only you. When I think about all the features in life and how they shape us to become what we are, I start to wonder what we are supposed to be working towards in the first place. What is the American Dream? Some will say that there is only one dream, however I believe that is a fallacy.

We live in a world of capitalism where it is said to give every person equal opportunities in life, however some people start at the very bottom. There are a variety of people in today’s world based on race, gender, occupation, and evidently social status or class. People like to think that there is no hierarchy, no levels of people that are considered better or well off than the level below, but there is. It is an existent feature that is simply hidden by the majority of people. Above all this however, this concept of starting from the bottom and working your way to the top financially is or could be someone’s American Dream. I have never had to experience a dream like this which I am incredibly thankful for. I have always had the luxury of a roof over my head and food on the table. It’s just another example of the varieties that surround us today. These stories of starting from the bottom to the top are real and in some cases, the American Dream of some.

When I was younger, I was constantly faced with the idea that one day I would start a family of my own. It was my parents hope from day one that they soon would be grandparents to a few lovely children. I mean, that is the purpose of humans scientifically, right? To procreate? Some people would argue that there is more to humans purpose than just that and I definitely agree with them. When I think about my future, I definitely see some kids, but I also see college and my dream occupation. However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that for some people, this is considered their biggest dream of all. Starting a family is like creating a legacy for yourself to never be forgotten. Maybe that’s why so many people start a family? Or is it the undying love you get from your kids that simply makes your life complete? I have no idea and I wont know for awhile. It is just so interesting to me how this idea of family could be someone’s number one priority for their future.

So, what is the American Dream you may ask? I couldn’t give you an answer. I just listed two known hopes and dreams for people living in this world today and I didn’t fit either one. I am excited for the idea of freedom in college and going through the experience of obtaining a job that can sustain me and my expenses. I am excited for all of that responsibility, alongside a few other features that may be added on later in life. Is this my American Dream? If so, then there must be multiple versions of the American Dream as one can not embody everyone’s hopes and needs for their future.

  1. As you know from my classtime musings, I struggle with the idea of the American Dream daily. I agree that it has to be unique to everyone, but I also wonder at its validity at all. Great topic!
